At Wilson Contracting & Smiths Transport, we know that transporting your cows – whether to winter grazing or the freezing works – is a significant task. Proper preparation ensures the safety and well-being of your animals and helps us provide the best transport service possible. Here’s our straightforward guide to getting your cows fit and ready for the journey.
Only cows that are healthy and fit should be transported. If a cow is unfit due to health issues but needs to be moved, a veterinary certificate is required, and all conditions specified must be met.
Ensure Your Cows Are Fit for Transport
Manage Lactating Cows Appropriately
Lactating cows are at higher risk during transport. It’s advisable to dry them off before transport. If that’s not possible, milk them as close to the pick-up time as possible to reduce discomfort and health risks .
Supplement with Calcium and Magnesium
To prevent milk fever, supplement your cows with calcium and magnesium at rates similar to those given to colostrum cows. Consult your vet for specific advice on supplementation .
Adjust Feeding Before Transport
Remove cows from lush green feed 4 to 12 hours before pick-up (maximum 6 hours for lactating cows). Provide roughage and water during this period to prevent digestive issues .
Provide a Comfortable Resting Area
Before transport, keep cows in a grazed-out paddock to allow them to rest. Avoid standing them on concrete surfaces, as this can cause discomfort .
Plan and Communicate Early
Coordinate transport plans at least a week in advance. Communicate with our team at least 12 hours before pick-up to ensure all preparations are in place.
By following these guidelines, you help ensure a safe and comfortable journey for your cows and a smooth process for everyone involved. If you have any questions or need assistance with transport arrangements, feel free to reach out to us. We’re here to help!
